Automated Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Epichlorohydrin Using GC-MS

Application Note

Epichlorohydrin; a chemical used in the manufacturing of plastics, polymers and resins can leach into the water supply and is subject to a maximum guideline value in drinking water. Epichlorohydrin is classified as a probable or likely carcinogen in humans. A typical method employed is manual liquid-liquid extraction, which is a time consuming and laborious process with the potential for poor reproducibility. By working with ALS Environmental, it was identified that automating the process could overcome these problems. The work outlined in this application note was performed at ALS Environmental using the GERSTEL MPS with agitator (MVorx) and Solvent Safe CF200 Centrifuge. The use of high recovery vials allows for better enrichment of analytes, as a smaller volume of extraction solvent can be used. The method has been validated to NS30 for drinking water with a recovery of 104% (at 8 µg/L) and an RSD of <5%, showing a large improvement in the manual procedure.
